San Francisco's acclaimed physical dance theater company CAPACITOR returns to New York with their latest synthesis of dance, science, and interactive media, BIOME. Choreographed by Jodi Lomask, performances run October 9 - 12 at Joyce SoHo.
BIOME explores the cooperation and communication which occurs between different species in nature. Part dance, part projected glimpses of remote rainforests, and part canopy science, the piece grew from an on-location collaboration with renowned canopy tree scientists in the Monteverde Cloud Forest of Costa Rica. In the world of BIOME, ties between humans and our planet become abundantly clear; everything is interconnected in a cycle of growth. BIOME brings a sense of wonderment to the delicate ecosystems which exist within our increasingly fragile world.
BIOME is danced by Cari Bellinghausen, Lizelle Gouws, Jocelynn Rudig, Ross
Hollenkamp, Noe Serrano, and Jodi Lomask. The production features a film by Amy Harrison, shot by Dan Zox; live violin by Julia Ogrydziak; visuals design by Nate Pagel; sound design by Roberto Salvatore from sound elements by Michael Zbyszyński, Tarik O'Regan, and Andrew May; costumes by Jodi Lomask, Kimmie Sako, Monique Kapp, and Tevya Tufford; props by Jodi Lomask and Mark Metz; and set design by Jodi Lomask and Adam Puglielli.
Since 1997, CAPACITOR artists have been collaborating with members of the scientific community to create mind-expanding, heart-gripping live performance. Capacitor artists share a love of scientific ideas and a desire to incorporate them into imaginative live performance. Obsessed with the mechanics of the human body as well as machines that propel the body through space, Capacitor artists have become masters of rigging systems, wearable sculpture, and large-scale prop design. Under the direction of Jodi Lomask, past works have tackled the creation of the universe (Within Outer Spaces, 2001); geology (Digging in the Dark, 2005); the future of mankind (future species, 2000); and video gaming (Avatars, 2002). Through performance, Capacitor encourages audiences of all ages to see patterns and relationships inherent in nature and the cosmos. The company endeavors to transcend cultural barriers, thus widening the scope of basic human experience.
Capacitor was last seen in New York in 2005, when Digging in the Dark was presented Off-Broadway. Capacitor has been produced nationally at venues in Illinois, Kentucky, Florida, Maine, North Carolina, Virginia, Colorado, and Nevada. Internationally they have appeared in Malaysia, Canada, Jamaica, El Salvador, Costa Rica, and Scotland. The company will perform at the TED conference this coming February 2009 in Long Beach California. They are also working on Urban Canopy, a site specific project with the California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park. For more information visit www.Capacitor.org.
